Collaboration, Not Competition

I have 2 boys, both started piano lessons at age 5. It did not take long for us to notice that Jonnie (younger brother) learns faster and plays better piano.

Naturally, the kids felt it too.

We didn’t allow Jason (elder brother) to feel any less able. In fact, I spend more time practicing with him in the beginning stage. It took us a few weeks to help Jason get his left and right hand coordination well and to be able to play one of his favourite songs, Faded. He was excited and have more confidence after that.

Do we work harder to make Jason an impressive piano player? What was the reason we send our children to learn piano? It never cross my mind that my boys will be professional musicians. None of our family members is musician. If they choose to be one, that’s their choice when they grow up.

For my husband and I, learning music is about character building. It’s an attitude to demand to progress and to be good.

So, we still want Jason to strive to be good at piano. At the same time, we expose both of them to other instruments like Violin, Drum and Guitar. Interestingly, Jason can play better drum and string instruments as compared to Jonnie.

Now our boys learned that every individual is unique and each has their own strengths. And the best is seeing them collaborate to make music more fun and interesting.
