“Why video games is so fun?” I asked my boys. We sat down and analyse and here’s what we gathered and learned:
1. Obstacles as opportunity to grow, not a burden. Gaming is fun and exciting only if we see all the obstacles as opportunities for us to challenge ourselves to grow beyond our current set of skills. If we see challenges as a burden, will we enjoy it? No.
2. Failure is necessary. Failures and experiences = process of collecting data. In order to be good at the game, we will need to get to know the type of obstacles and the rules to win. Even if we know the theory, we will still experience many failures when playing the games. We will have keep learning and practicing to grow and be pro.
3. EFFORT and GRIT is the key to success. We enjoy playing games because we believe our ability to solve problem can grow with continuous effort. It is through grit to overcome series of difficulties and frustrations, and cracking our heads to overcome all the obstacles that we finally get to experience the feelings of euphoria and a sense of fulfilment when we accomplished something that seemed impossible!
Likewise, I think life can be fun and fulfilled if we apply the same attitude ~ to see challenges as opportunities to grow, enjoy effort, be intrigued by mistakes, learn, grow and persevere to grind through a lot of frustrating work until we achieve something that we feel truly proud of.
